Juneteenth is celebrated as the date when the last slaves being held in Texas found out they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. The realization in came some 2 1/2 years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the document. This year, Juneteenth will be observed with a Western Roundup in Columbus. The event is organized by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Each year, the sorority organizes a Western Roundup as a major fundraiser to help with community projects. The Juneteenth Western Roundup will be held on Friday, June 14 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35. For information and tickets, call Lisa Thomas-Cutts at 706-329-3482. You can also purchase ticket at Carolyn Hugely’s State Farm and the Columbus Civic Center.
