Soror Alicia Keys announced alongside Dionne Warwick as an honoree for this year’s Black Girls Rock (BGR) event on BET. Keys and Warwick are to accept the awards at a star studded awards ceremony on October 13th. For those of us that have YET to receive our invitation, the show will premiere internationally on November 13th. Soror Keys is to receive the “rockstar” award.
BGR has gained much notoriety in the past few years. Starting as an innovative non profit, BGR is 501(c)3 non-profit youth empowerment and mentoring organization established to promote the arts for young women of color, as well as to encourage dialogue and analysis of the ways women of color are portrayed in the media.
This year’s show is one to watch as actresses Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King return as hosts. Other awardees include actress Kerry Washington, Susan Taylor and Somali activist Dr. Hawa Abdi. Musical performances include Brandy, India.Arie, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, and more.
BGR creator Beverly Bond was recently honored at this year’s boule activities. National President Carolyn House Stewart awarded Bond with the Presidential award. In reaction, Beverly Bond took to Twitter this past July(@beverlybond):
Thank u 2 Pres Carolyn Stewart & all of the women of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA sorority for honoring me with the Presidential Award 2nite! #AKAboule
