Phrat Friday: Olympic Runner Finishes Race on a Broken Leg and He’s Our Phrat! (Phirst Pham)

Recent Olympic events have inspired a new blog posting for today. We are calling it “Phrat Friday”.

Today we highlight US Olympian, Manteo Mitchell, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He ran a preliminary relay yesterday in London, led the team to qualifying, and did it all on a BROKEN LEG! Can you say “Don’t Quit!” With 200 meters to go in the first leg of the 4×400-meter relay, Phrat Mitchell kept running!!

“I heard it and I felt it,” Phrat Mitchell told The Associated Press. “But I figured it’s what almost any person would’ve done in that situation.”

Not only did this represent the United States in a positive way, but it also personified the principles of A Phi A and made the whole world smile!

A section from Don’t Quit

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out–
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit–
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

We do celebrate everything pink and green, but we have to give proper congratulations when they are due! Good job phrat! 06 08, the Rest Were Just Too Late.
