ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA/CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO TO CO-HOST SUMMIT FOR 200 YOUTH
Former college football star Inky Johnson will recount paralyzing injury and share lessons on how to move forward after adversity
Chicago, Illinois – May 9. 2012 – Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the City of San Francisco are joining forces to host a power-packed Youth Summit for 200 area youth ages 10-17. The Summit takes place on Thursday July 26 from 10AM TO 12 Noon at the Joseph Lee Recreation Center, 1395 Mendell Street in San Francisco.
In making the announcement, Alpha Kappa Alpha‟s international president Carolyn House Stewart said that the event is aimed at sparking dialogue on topics and issues that impact, confront and challenge young people.
“We hope to give them guideposts and viable strategies on how to grapple and overcome these issues and challenges. The ultimate goal is to teach young people leadership skills and equip them with the tools that will help them successfully navigate in an increasingly complex world.”
Stewart said Inquoris “Inky” Johnson is the featured speaker and an ideal motivator whose message is uplifting. Inky, a former University of Tennessee college football star, will share his compelling story of how a severe injury inflicted during a college game altered his life in a matter of seconds. Once a prospect for the pros, that life-changing tackle to the head crushed plans he had for a career in the NFL. Johnson, who still has paralysis in his right arm, will talk to the youth about pushing through adversity with perseverance and faith.
In addition to Johnson‟s message, the Summit will feature area leaders who will engage students in conversations on civic engagement, leadership development, self esteem, bullying, social media, conflict resolution, academic preparation and character building. In turn, youth will be encouraged to express their ideas, opinions and needs after hearing testimonials and presentations from these program participants.
The 200 young people who will participate are students in the public school system in San Francisco and will be attending summer programs at the Joseph Lee Recreation Center, which is a San Francisco Recreation and Park facility that serves the Bayview/Hunters Point District. The Center serves adults, seniors and youth through a comprehensive array of activities and programs.
At the end of the Summit, each student will be presented a bag of school supplies from the Sorority. Alpha Kappa Alpha will also gift the City‟s public school division with what is expected to be over $200,000 worth of supplies.
The Summit represents an extension of Alpha Kappa Alpha‟s signature initiative, The Emerging Young Leaders program, which impacts the lives of 10,000 girls worldwide in grades six through eight, including in San Francisco. The program recognizes that the increasing demands of the 21st century mandate that our youth be better leaders at a younger age and possess the tools to make smart choices with positive outcomes.
“Alpha Kappa Alpha is excited to be hosting this Youth Summit as it provides a Forum for candid dialogue and provocative exchange,” said Alpha Kappa Alpha‟s International President Attorney Carolyn House Stewart. “With the world so complex, this Summit will provide a pathway where youth can process the challenges and be given the tools to that will bring out the leader in them. Such a forum parallels Alpha Kappa Alpha‟s theme of fostering „Global Leadership Through Timeless Service.‟”
The Youth Summit is one of a host of events that will be held during the Sorority‟s convention that will be held at the Moscone Center from July 21-27.
