Soror Maya Angelou Sends Mother’s Day Greetings at Home Church in Winston-Salem

(reported by the Winston-Salem Journal)

Soror Maya Angelou, in a Mother’s Day address to her church, encouraged mothers — particularly African-American mothers — to stand together in solidarity and win people over with love.

In a speech filled with poetry and, at times, song, Soror Angelou spoke about slavery, about the strength African-American women have, and about the people who sometimes degrade them.

“We must love them into understanding,” Soror Angelou said. “We must win them back with love.”

Soror Angelou spoke during the 11 a.m. service at her home church – Mount Zion Baptist Church on File Street as part of the church’s ongoing celebration of its 123rd anniversary. About 400 people attended.
