Soror Star Jones was seen on the red carpet at the 135th Kentucky Derby yesterday- May 5, 2012. She was flawless rocking a hat that – in our opinion – should have been a major contender for best at the Derby.

Historically, Kentucky Derby hats are insanely elaborate creations, from boaters to berets, caps to fedoras, generally involving gigantic floral arrangements. Derby hats (on men and women) have become an American tradition, and every year the hats get more and more outlandish. The goal of a successful hat at Churchill Downs is creativity. What covers your head doesn’t have to be flattering or coordinate with your dress. It’s quite the opposite: One’s hat can look ridiculous as long as it’s unique, over-the-top and completely unforgettable.

As a part of the derby, celebs also participated in a special red carpet event with Moet & “Sign for Roses”. “Sign for the Roses” honors the Kentucky Derby® and benefits the initiatives funded by the races official charity, The Churchill Downs Incorporated Foundation (CDIF). For each celebrity signature on the 6 Liter bottle on the Red Carpet, Moet & Chandon will donate to the charity benefiting industry needs concentrating on education, health & welfare, the industry and the local arts such as  Thoroughbred retirement, therapeutic funds for the horse as well as programs for local children and education.

Another soror on the carpet? Lynn Whitfield!
