Soror Phylicia Rashad was the first African-American to win a Tony for Leading Actress in a Play in 2004,  for “A Raisin in the Sun.” In 2012, her daughter, Condola Rashad,  may receive one as well.

Condola Rashad – an up and coming, accomplished actor in her own right- received a Tony nomination yesterday for best performance by an actress in a play for Soror Alicia KeysStick Fly.

Tony awards are presented to honor outstanding performances on the Broadway stage.

Interestingly enough, Soror Rashad’s daughter couldn’t get to her initially to share the news. According to SpeakEasy blog of the Wall Street Journal, it took Condola over 3 hours.  “She was the last person I talked to because I couldn’t find her,” Rashad said. “She had no service so I just kept calling. By the time I talked to her, she already heard.”

The Tony Awards will air live on June 10 at the Beacon Theatre in New York. Neil Patrick Harris will serve as host.
