Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will underscore its commitment to environmental sustainability by planting trees at the University of South Florida in recognition of Arbor Day and in celebration of the University of South Florida (USF) being designated as a national Tree Campus USA. The official tree planting will began today at 9:00am at the USF Patel Center for Environmental Sustainability on USF’s Tampa campus. Approximately 20 trees will be planted.
A press conference will be held in the next hour (1:30pm) at the Patel Center where the official announcement will be made.
Gwen Myers, Chair of AKA’s Building and Properties Committee, will represent AKA’s International President Attorney Carolyn House Stewart and will participate in the press conference. Attorney Stewart is an alumnus of the University of South Florida where she was initiated as an undergraduate in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. University of South Florida President Dr. Judy Genshaft will also attend the dedication ceremony. Representatives from the Arbor Day Foundation, the sponsoring agency, will also be in attendance.
In making the announcement, AKA’s International President Carolyn House Stewart declared, “Embracing environmental sustainability parallels Alpha Kappa Alpha’s program theme, Global Leadership through Timeless Service. Consistent with this theme, members across the county are recognizing the importance of becoming good stewards and advocates of our environment. I am particularly proud that this program will be carried out at my alma mater, the University of South Florida.”
This initiative supports an alliance between Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the United States Environmental Protection Agency in which both entities vowed to protect communities from environmental health risks through outreach efforts that promote environmental education and sustainability. As part of the partnership, the sorority is implementing several educational programs to celebrate the environment and eco-friendly initiatives. The agreement with the Arbor Day Foundation represents one of the initiatives.
The initiative is produced in collaboration with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
