The Sigma Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc Brings Tuskegee Airman to Houston campus
During their annual week celebration, the Sigma Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority brought Tuskegee Airman, Dr. Luzine B Bickham to start a much needed dialogue on campus on April 11, 2012.
Though his message was perceived as “light-hearted and funny” according to the student newspaper article, it was much needed during this time of racial uncertainty in America.
“The career path then was not to fight discrimination, but find a way to succeed despite it,” said Dr. Luzine B. Bickham during the talk. A member of the famed African-American pilot group, Dr. Bickham piloted several aircraft for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
In the wake of Trayvon Martin’s death, an upcoming election of the first U.S. President of color, and more reminders of racism, equality, and more, this event was much needed. Keep leading by example sorors, bringing together speakers, college students, leaders, influencers, game changers, and more.
